In addition to being an atypical painter belonging to the currents of narrative figuration and New Figuration, Gilles Aillaud was also a playwright and stage designer. In his work, he explores the relationship between man and nature, both from an ecological and a social perspective, and his work reflects mankind’s desire for domination over animals.
This retrospective exhibition pays tribute to his artistic career, mainly to his paintings of animals in captivity. A philosophical way of painting and understanding the world, representing the natural interconnection and separation between living beings, especially between species, typical of Western culture.
The exhibition is curated by Didier Ottinger, Deputy Director of the Musée national d’art moderne.
