Suzanne Valadon is the first major monographic exhibition devoted to the French post-Impressionist artist since 1967.
Bringing together nearly two hundred works, the exhibition offers a comprehensive journey through Valadon’s career. Early sketches, still lifes, landscapes, and portraits—including several of her son, the painter Maurice Utrillo—are presented alongside the bold and expressive nudes for which she is most celebrated. Having posed for artists such as Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Puvis de Chavannes, Valadon developed a singular ability to portray her own models, both male and female, with a rare sense of empathy and humanity.
After its presentation at the Centre Pompidou, the exhibition has been shown at the Centre Pompidou-Metz, the Musée d’arts de Nantes, and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya in Barcelona. Curated by Chiara Parisi, Director of the Centre Pompidou-Metz, Suzanne Valadon reintroduces to the public a pioneering figure whose work continues to challenge conventions and captivate audiences today.
