Shimabuku: Octopus, Citrus, Human is the first retrospective of Japanese contemporary artist Michihiro Shimabuku to take place in Spain. Shimabuku’s approach, experimental and conceptual in nature, is often humorous and spontaneous, and results in art works that encompass a variety of media, from video to sculpture, and from photography to text. The exhibition’s title references three new works commissioned by the Fundación Botín on the occasion of the retrospective, all of which involve local communities. Co-curated by Shimabuku and Bárbara Rodríguez Muñoz, director of exhibitions at the Centro Botín, the exhibition is accompanied by a richly illustrated catalogue that features a conversation between the co-curators alongside texts by the academic Filipa Ramos and artist Philippe Parreno.
