The first half of the 20th century was a period of creative and technical exploration for many photographers, and this experimentation resulted in some of the most iconic images of the 20th century and the history of the photographic medium.
The European and American avant-gardes are portrayed through 350 photographs from the collection donated by Thomas Walther to MoMA, including works by around a hundred photographers, such as Berenice Abbott, El Lissitzky, Edward Weston and André Kertész.
