The British artist of Ghanian origin Lynette Yiadom-Boakye began painting from reality, but soon realized that figurative painting could also be imaginary. Devoid of social or cultural context, her figures have a timeless quality, and deliberately provoke an open-ended interpretation as to the identity of those depicted or the place where they are located.
Yiadom-Boakye is the second youngest woman to exhibit at the Guggenheim. The catalogue of the exhibition, curated by Lekha Hileman Waitoller, includes more than 70 recent paintings and drawings shown to the public for the first time, as well as texts by the artist.
