Book Design
an Archive is the most recent artist’s book by Edmund de Waal, who defines himself as “an artist who writes.” Known for both his prose and his large-scale porcelain installations, this volume brings together a selection of his writings spanning more than a decade. These texts explore the very nature of archives—their curiosities and contradictions—while also addressing specific archives, some personal, others belonging to artists, poets, and places he admires. The book itself tests the concept of the archive by constituting one in its own right. It forms part of the Ivorypress Archives series, whose aim is to make previously unpublished, forgotten, or out-of-print material available to the public.
